Why it lasts

Furniture the way it used to be made.

Engineered shortcuts built the modern furniture industry. We build the older way — choosing the material, the joint, and the finish for how a piece will actually be used.

01

Custom design

Every project is drawn from the ground up to your exact specifications, so the piece fits your space, your style, and the way you live with it.

02

Solid materials

We build only with solid wood or furniture-grade plywood — never particleboard or MDF — so your furniture can be refinished and handed down.

03

Time-tested joinery

Wood-to-wood joints like dovetails and mortise-and-tenon, used by ancient cultures, for the strongest and most reliable construction.

01 — Design

Designed to your specifications

“I saw a piece in a catalog, but it won't fit my space — can you build one like it?” The answer is yes. Because we draw every design ourselves, we can scale it larger or smaller and adjust the look or function to fit exactly what you need.

02 — Build

Built to last generations

Each board is examined, oriented, and dried before it's cut, then joined wood-to-wood wherever that makes the strongest joint and glued so it never moves once set. Nothing is left to assumption — the final use of the piece guides every choice.

Who we are

Built by hand in Knoxville

Dovetail Woodworks was founded by Erin Watson in 2001, out of a desire to create furniture the way it used to be made — pieces sturdy enough to be handed down to the next generation. A licensed Tennessee Home Improvement Contractor, Erin learned woodworking from his father and grandfather and is always looking to learn and improve.

Details matter. The human finger can feel a difference of one one-thousandth of an inch. Our goal is joints so seamless the finished piece feels as if it were carved from a single block of wood.

“There is always opportunity to learn and improve.”

A few recent pieces

No two boards are the same, so no two pieces are either — each one is built for the people who'll use it.

Each piece of lumber is unique, like a fingerprint — so no two pieces we build are ever the same.
